En 1935, Gerta Pohorylle, Juive allemande, fuit son pays pour Paris où elle rencontre André Friedmann, Hongrois antifasciste. Photographe passionné, il l'initie à son art. Tout deux s'inventent bientôt des identités américaines et deviennent Robert Capa et Gerda Taro. Investis par le devoir d'informer, ils partent photographier les atrocités de la guerre civile en Espagne.
