Voici le onzième album solo et le premier depuis "Lullaby and... the ceaseless roar" (2014) du chanteur de Led Zeppelin. Il a été produit par Plant dans l'ouest de l'Angleterre et du Pays de Galles. Il est accompagné par son groupe The Sensational Space Shifters mais également par de nombreux invités. On retrouve entre autres Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders) qui chante en duo avec Robert Plant sur Bluebirds over the mountain. Le premier extrait, The may queen, a fait sensation parmi les fans de Robert Plant et de Led Zeppelin. En effet, ce titre empreint de mélancolie semble faire écho aux classiques de Led Zeppelin et notamment au morceau Stairway to heaven dans lequel le groupe évoquait déjà la May queen.
