En décembre 2001, Sufjan Stevens décide d'enregistrer un disque de chansons de noël pour ses proches et sa famille : "Noël : Volume 1". Il poursuit les années suivantes ses créations/cadeaux, avec "Hark : volume 2",- "Ding Ding ! Volume 3" et "Joy : Volume 4". Ce coffret regroupe donc plus de 40 titres jusqu'ici inédits, accompagné d'un livret de 42 pages, où l'on trouve entre les paroles, illustrations et tablatures de Sufjan, une nouvelle de l'écrivain américain Ricky Moody et un clip d'animation.
